Daniel Fontana Oberling

Daniel Fontana Oberling is a climate adaptation and environmental management expert, with degree in Industrial Engineering at Fluminense Federal University (UFF), MSc. and DSc. in Energy and Environmental Planning at UFRJ (2008 and 2013). He has over 12 years of research expertise on impact assessment and climate change risk assessment. He is currently performing his Postdoctoral Fellow at the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) on climate change risk assessment of cities infrastructure. In 2016, he worked on the research project “Rio de Janeiro Adaptation Plan”, which have assessed Rio de Janeiro City´s strategy to deal with the most important impacts from climate change. In 2015, he was the coordinator of the “Brazilian Climate Change Adaptation Plan for urban transport”, under supervision of Ministry of Cities. It developed guidelines on how to assess climate change vulnerabilities in Brazilian cities, with a focus on urban transport infrastructure and mobility, considering biophysical and socioeconomic aspects. Recent knowledge dissemination events include the organization of one technical workshop on adaptation measures for urban transport under climatic change stress, joining researchers from important Brazilian universities, in November 2015. In 2014, he worked on the research project “Brazil 2040: Scenarios and Alternatives for Climate Change Adaptation”. Entrusted by Secretariat of Strategic Affairs, he was responsible for identification and assessment of major Brazilian road infrastructure´s vulnerability to climate change. Daniel is lead or contributing author of over to 10 international and national publications, including high-impact global assessment reports (GEO5, 2011), and is a reviewer for the Journal of Cleaner Production.
